In the course of the last few years the policy
of the Board of Directors has been to concentrate upon
improvements and additions to the Company's Properties.
Since 1916 $12,000,000 has been expended in this
connection and not the least important is the erection
of an Iron, Brass and Steel Foundry, 300 X 200 ft., fully
equipped with overhead electric cranes and all the necessary equipment to turn out castings economically and expeditiously.
The saving to the Admiralty in making such an
arrangement, as outlined above, is obvious, as under existing conditions a dual organisation is being maintained for work which could be carried out by a single unit.
In addition to the Naval Yard Property the Admiralty own a Hospital (known as the Naval Hospital) the locality of which is amongst Chinese houses. This Property could be made use of by the Hongkong Government in its road development scheme.
I would suggest that this Hospital Site is also disposed of to the Colony, and in its place recommend a more suitable and healthy location for a new Naval Hospital in the same Compound (comprising 11 acres) as the Nursing Home which is being erected as a War Memorial by the Public of Hongkong on a very fine
Bite 700/800 feet above the sea level.
